Don't Ditch Your Decor – Pull it Together with a Console Table!

Do you have a room that has nice window treatments, nice furnishings and yet, it doesn't seem to flow? You don't need to completely ditch your decor design all together – what you most likely need to do is make the colors and design in your work together and simply pull it together.

How does this happen? A lot of times it is because a person has decided that they want a specific look to their interior design, such as French Country. They items and accents to pull off this design and then halfway through the decorating they find themselves pulled in another decorating direction and the result is a room that looks confusing and doesn't have a calm demeanor about it.

Start over and make a firm decision for the type of look you really want in your room. Don't choose a style because it's all the rage right now. Fads pass and then you're stuck with a design you never really were comfortable with in the first place. If you really want that French Country look, go for it but stick with your ideas from start to finish. If you find that your likes and dislikes have given sway to a new interest in your interior design – go with that particular style or combine like styles to create your own unique look that will be easy to keep up.

The first major step is to do take stock of your room and determine what pieces will stay, what pieces can be altered so they can stay (paint, slipcovers, etc) and what items need to go. Then turn your attention to your draperies. The colors in your window treatments should carry the main colors in your decor design.

Make a pact with yourself to only add items that have two key elements – style and function. A good example would be a console chest or table or even an armoire. You can stash away items and keep your clutter factor to a bare minimum as well as having a stylish piece in your room adding clean lines to the overall design.

There are only two main elements left for a room redo. Your lighting is the first, and that's an easy choice: for a room that is awake and vibrant go for a brighter lighting scheme; and for a cozy feel, go for a softer lighting set up. Then add your personal touches. This can be collections of photos, favorite artworks or your own doodles framed and hung on the wall.

There are no wrong answers when you're re-designing your room, just be aware of your colors, keep the clutter down and most of all, add your personal stamp of individuality through the items you choose for your room and you will have a one of a kind creation that looks fabulous all year round.
