When you think "rustic" think about the type of furniture you might see at a ski lodge on Aspen or at a cozy nook by the lake. It will generally be simply made and very sturdy. Wrought iron furniture is a great example of rustic furniture as well as plain, wooden type tables. Hearty and sturdily built are the very hallmarks of the rustic furniture design.

The rustic look often blends fantastically with many interior decor styles and especially when paired with the French Country look. Good rustic pieces to add to a living room would include a big, simply designed coffee table in front of a large sofa with a wooden base. Other rooms can benefit from the cozy feel of rustic decor. A wrought iron bed with a big, soft comfortable and the addition of an overhead canopy will add a homey and romantic feel to the bedroom. Other rustic-themed ideas include large, heavy wooden tables for the kitchen, storage benches and accent tables with a strong, sturdy build.

Small decorating accents such as baskets, cozy throws and soft pillows will all add fire to your rustic design. This is a great look for the colder months especially as rustic themed rooms just feel a little more cozy, warm and inviting.

Nix the Television
That doesn't mean take it out of the room, that means make it television is among your choices in the room. A Queen Anne style entertainment center will do a good job of hiding a television when it is not in use; additionally the drawers and shelves within will do their duty and keep clutter in the room to a minimum and keep those DVDs and CDs in their place.

Make a Central Point
If you have a fireplace, make that your central spot. If not any place in your room will do. Look at the placement of your sofa and chairs and arrange them to face each other instead of in a line facing the wall where the television is. Make a conversation corner and in between the chairs and sofa, place a coffee table for sharing snacks or playing games. This is a great way to have the family reconnect and spend time together.

Make one night a week a family night. You'll find that one night a week will soon translate into more as your family reclaims the enjoyment of spending time together. One family would gather and have each member bring a CD and play one song from it. Everyone would comment on whatever was played by writing down what they thought and then reading the critiques out loud. This would usually lead to some expansions of musical horizons for everyone along with some funny comments.

Making a few simple furniture arrangements and a couple of additions can turn your living room into a room that the entire family will enjoy gathering in and spending time together after work and school.

First of all, decide what type of meal you want to serve. For a Thanksgiving gathering of your family and friends you can chose to celebrate two different ways. Have a smörgåsbord and invite everyone to bring a hot or cold dish which will really help free you from complete kitchen duty; or you can plan a sit down meal for everyone to enjoy. Fortunately, you can also get out of the kitchen on Thanksgiving, if you make several of the foods in advance.

Some of the foods you can make in advance are the traditional favorites such as cranberries, coleslaw and other cold salads can be made one to two days in advance. Rolls can be made the day before and then popped in the oven prior to serving so they are hot and delicious. For the turkey, make sure it is fully thawed before cooking as many a cook has found out the hard way, a frozen turkey placed in an oven will come out with brown skin and a still frozen and uncooked interior. Dessert favorites such as pumpkin pie and apple pie can be made a day in advance and then all you have to do is warm and serve, if your guest so desires.

Make sure you have a place for everyone and if you don't already have a dining room table that expands with an optional extra leaf, it may be time to consider upgrading your dining furniture. After all, when this Thanksgiving goes off smooth and without a hitch, everyone will want to come back to your place next year!

Never think that you have to go through drastic measures in order to get your family back together again over a nice night once a week. This sort of evening can be anything from gathering around and cooking a meal together to setting aside time after chores and homework to sit at a game table and play cards or even your favorite board game.

By taking the time out of your busy schedules to enjoy even one night with your family as a unit, you will not only build stronger bonds, but you will be amazed at the amount of fun that you can have. They always say that the best conversations can come from the dinner table, so go ahead and see what your children may want to do in order to get the conversation going with a regular family night. You really have nothing to lose and everything to gain from putting a solid family night in place that all of you can enjoy and cherish for years to come.

Setting up your luncheon will mean having a great central area that contains the food that you will be enjoying. This can be done by having food set up buffet style on a table or highboy or even a sit down meal that you can eat at the dinner table in the dining room. Either way, with the right food choices, a great table setting that is reminiscent of the season or special occasion and a gathering of some of your closest friends, your luncheon should be one that all of you will remember for quite some time.
